Essay must be argumentative. It is not a summary or a report. Use either problem/solution method or argument of evaluation method to write an argumentative essay.
Introduction:
1. Enter the reader into an academic conversation regarding the topic.
2. Provide a brief overview of what the essay will be about. Unlike previous essays, do not introduce all of the sources that you will be discussing. This will overwhelm the reader!
3. End with a thesis statement that clearly contains the essays main argument.
Body:
1. There are several types of argument essay structures that you can employ. However, make sure that you explore:
1)The origin of the concept you are researching. When and where did the concept originate? What effect did it have in its early stages?
2)A discussion of how the concept has changed or stayed the same over time.
3)A discussion of how or why the concept is still relevant in contemporary America.
2. Use the body of the essay to support your thesis statement.
3. Each topic sentence should introduce the main idea of its paragraph.
4. Each topic sentence should relate to the thesis statement.
5. Use details and examples from the readings to support your topic sentences.
6. Use the quotation sandwich method when integrating quotations.
7. When using sources, provide the reader with adequate context. The reader should have a working grasp of what your sources are saying and why you are using them. Introduce them before discussing them (author, title, brief summary of the text).
Conclusion: What should the reader understand now that they have read your essay?
