Prepare a research proposal of 2000 words (excluding reference list) on a criminological topic of your choice. Your proposed research project could be of any size or scale, however many students use this as an opportunity to think about their research dissertation.
There is no set format, however your proposal must include:
A clear statement of research question/aims of the research
A brief review of the relevant academic literature which locates the proposed research within
the existing research on your topic.
A detailed outline of how the research questions will be addressed, with particular attention to
what you would actually do and why. You must refer to the research methods literature to support your justification. Please give examples of how you will operationalise and measure/explore key concepts, e.g. sample interview/questionnaire questions. This section should form the bulk of your research proposal.
A consideration of ethical issues and potential problems which could arise and how you would deal with them
An explanation of what kinds of data you will collect, how you will analyze them and what you
anticipate finding out.
Your research proposal will be assessed primarily on how well it demonstrates your understanding of research methods. Ensure that your proposal references academic writing on research methods and employs appropriate research concepts.
Please NOTE: The proposed research cannot be a review of existing research. It must produce new understanding about a topic, rather than summarize existing knowledge.
