I choose Crash bandicoot game..so you will analysis the Crash bandicoot game..
Participate individually to discuss why some games are commercially successful.
Analyze how sound may affect video game popularity and sales.
Introduction:
A video game can be commercially successful due in part to its stunning graphics, interactivity, fun, game play and challenges, among other elements, including how engaging a video game is. In addition, good ambient music, sound effects and narrations/voice overs can make a video game more immersive and engaging. Sound can greatly improve player experience in video games, and may affect the popularity/sales of some video games. There are a number of sound parameters that directly affect the way we perceive sound, such as directivity, stereo position, loudness, and fidelity, among others. The way we play the sound will also affect the player experience. It includes the type of headphones, speakers and amplifiers/sound processors we use for listening to video game sounds.
In this assignment, you will analyze how important sound is in video games and how it can affect video game popularity/sales.
Instructions:
Work individually in this assignment. Team work will not be graded.
You will try out and analyze the sounds of any commercial video game. You should analyze it at the Gaming Lab (NW201), since you will be using the video games, consoles and audio equipment found there.
Contact the teaching assistant (TA) in turn to pick up a video game console and a game from the Gaming Lab and schedule a time with him. The game should include natural and artificial sound effects (e.g. the sound of a thunder, the sound a shot gun, etc.), background music, incidental music, and voice overs (verbal narrations or messages made by people, such as the ones found in cut scenes, tutorials, the voice of an NPC, etc.). You can also bring your own game to the lab. The gaming lab has Playstation 3, Playstation 2, Xbox 360 (+Kinect), Wii, Wii U, and Ouya consoles.
Alternatively, run a PC game from the gaming lab. It can be a free, online game. Play it there.
IMPORTANT: Let me know in an email first what game you will analyze, so other students who will do this assignment should play different games. Also, ask your classmates first what games they will be analyzing.
Play the game for a reasonable time. Explore its contents and pay attention to its sounds.
Write a list of natural and man-made sound effects, background (ambient) music and voice overs that appear in the game. Use one column for writing the type of sound heard (sound effect/ambient music/voice), a second column describing the quality of the sound, a third column describing how meaningful the sound was (was it timely and appropriate to its corresponding action/event?), and a fourth column indicating how engaging the sound was.
You should hear the sounds using headphones (provided by the TA or contact me, or bring your own).
Write a report (with at least 4 pages) containing the following:
Your name.
The name of the video game analyzed.
The above list of the sounds and their description.
Find on the Internet how popular and commercially successful the chosen game is (or was, if it is an old game). Add the information you found to the report. Add references (sources of information) at the end of the report.
Explain in the report how important the sound effects, ambient music, and voice overs are for the game, how they affect the player experience of the game and how do you think the sound can be related to the success of the game.
Add photos of the test showing the game being played. Also, get screenshots of the game.
