The Flynn effect: Are we smarter than our parents?

Read the article entitled, “Are We Smarter than Our Parents?” in chapter 5 of your textbook. This article addresses a study by Dr. James Flynn of the rise of the IQ rate over generations, and how statistics are involved in tracking this phenomenon, especially with reference to the material in chapter 5.

Write a paper in which you explore some of the statistical data that has been found in this area of study. Additionally choose and answer one of the four questions below in a focused and clear manner. Remember to integrate the statistical data in the article that discusses this topic.
1.Which explanation do you favor for the Flynn effect: that people are getting smarter or that people are merely getting more practice at the skills measured on IQ tests? Defend your opinion.
2.The rise in performance on IQ tests contrasts sharply with a steady decline in performance over the past few decades on many tests that measure factual knowledge, such as the SAT. Think of several possible ways to explain these contrasting results, and form an opinion as to the most likely explanation.
3.Results on IQ tests tend to differ among different ethnic groups. Some people have used this fact to argue that some ethnic groups tend to be intellectually superior to others. Can such an argument still be supported in light of the Flynn effect? Defend your opinion.
4.Discuss some of the common uses of JQ tests. Do you think that IQ tests should be used for these purposes? Does the Flynn effect alter your thoughts about the uses of IQ tests? Explain.
Length: 1-2 pages not including title and reference pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Review APA Form and Style.

Language Simulation

There’s not much that I can do with you in this course that will allow you to feel some of the frustration that students with speech or language deficits encounter on a daily basis. But, I did come up with one simulation. For a period of 1 hour, I want you to make normal conversation, but during this hour, you are not to say a word that has the sound /r/ in it. You should do this at a time when you will have occasion to speak, however, you may not want to do this in the working environment. When you have finished the simulation, write a 2 page paper describing how the simulation affected you. Did it cause frustration in you? In others? What about your rate of speech? How long did it take you to form your thoughts?

Current interest rates

Please reply to this article:

Currently interest rates are near historic lows. With the Federal Funds rate at 0.25% there is not much further to go down (bankrate.com). With treasuries trading at very low rates, stable companies should be able to raise capital in today’s market at low rate that remains attractive to investors seeking higher returns than from government bonds. They should also be able to issue longer time horizon bonds that will extend the positive benefit of taking on debt well into the future by reducing short-term expenses and maximizing the chances of interest rate and inflation increases.

In addition to the benefit of securing loans at historically low interest rates; the company may also be able to gain a tax advantage on capital, which could be more advantageous than holding cash. There is an article in Forbes describing why Apple, with $145 Billion in cash has decided to issue bonds (Forbes).

With signs of an economic recovery becoming clearer, a company with the means to do so can invest in facilities now using capital raised from bonds and be in a strong position to gain market share as the economy picks up. It can also buy back stock as Apple is choosing to do.

Low interest bonds will also benefit the company as the economy improves because the coupon payments will cost the company less in present day dollars. Even with a low ROI use for the capital the company stands to make money if inflation out paces the issued bond interest rate.

Identifying some of the facts you have uncovered regarding your research topic.

Overview:

This Discussion provides a useful way for you to begin identifying some of the facts you have uncovered regarding your research topic. You may want to use some or all of these facts in your Information Report and, later, in your final Research Project, as well. Be sure to cite your facts following MLA citation guidelines. [Other research styles are ineligible for credit in this course.]

To prepare for this assignment, refer to the “Assignment List” pages in our previous modules, about locating, citing, and evaluating sources.

NOTE: If you did not receive approval from me for your research thesis in the “Research Proposal” Discussion, be sure to contact me in the current Discussions Qs & As thread for thesis approval before you proceed in the course.

Instructions:

Select and post two (2) critical and/or fascinating facts that you learned from one or two professional and current sources (published in the last five years) regarding your current research topic.
Do not quote. Instead, interpret your facts using *only* your own words, i.e., paraphrase or summarize the source information. And use only 3rd person pronouns (he, she, it, they, their, them, etc.).
At the end of each statement of fact, insert an MLA-style parenthetical reference (in-text citation) to credit your source for the idea and to help you avoid plagiarism.
Parenthetical Reference Examples

Article with two authors: … (Hepburn and Simon).
Anonymous article: … (“Election Reforms in Dire Need”).
4. Below your two cited facts, insert a Works Cited list of bibliographic citations, one for each source you cited in your facts list. Alphabetize your list of citations and, for each online article, include a complete Internet address that will take readers directly to your article page.
