Check out your favorite (publicly traded) retailer’s annual report. You can go to Yahoo! Finance or another type of finance site you may be familiar with and type in their name or stock symbol to find their report. You can usually find the same information on that retailer’s investor relations section of their website. Read a bit of the assumptions surrounding either the balance sheet or their income statement or a cash flow statement. Then, comment on one element of that financial statement’s assumptions. For example, has revenue increased? Why? Did assets decrease due to sales of owned real estate? Why?
