All the paperwork needed to answer any problems are in the Relative Age Dating Lab and worksheet download. follow the instructions and if you cannot access the practice problems do not worry about them.
In this lab you will practice some of the methods that geologists use to determine the relative age of rocks and the geologic history of an area. When interpreting the diagrams in the lab, remember that a rock has to exist before anything else can happen to it. It has to exist BEFORE:
another layer can be deposited on top of it
it can be faulted
it can be intruded by an igneous rock
it can be eroded
pieces of it can be incorporated in another rock
it can experience contact metamorphism (Contact metamorphism happens when preexisting rock is intruded by igneous material. The composition and texture of the pre-existing rock changes in response to the heat and fluids).
To complete the lab:
Read about relative dating principles within Chapter 12 of your textbook: Earth Science, 14th Edition
