Planning is essential if an individual is to manage by efficiency rather than by crisis and the old adage “fail to plan-plan to fail is timeless. I believe that time management is an intricate part of becoming a successful nurse. Nursing is such a demanding and stressful job that can lead to nurses burning out. In my everyday nursing practice I begin with organizing my day while prioritizing the most important tasks. I work on an oncology unit were we hang chemotherapy, give lots of blood products, and supplements, and many patients are on multiple antibiotics. Most of the time I don’t have the IV access I need to give all of the them at the same time so I have to prioritize my day for each individual patient, and start with the most beneficial for that patient. I try not to procrastinate and leave things for later. I prefer to get as much done as I can in the morning because what is going to happen in the afternoon is unknown. Most of the time on my unit chaos breaks out in the afternoon so I’m usually done with most of the essential paperwork by that time. It is also very extremely important to delegate tasks to the nursing assistants and the secretary when possible. I try not to let disruptions disorganize my day. I just deal with them accordingly. On my unit there have been plenty of times that a patient has become septic, and the plan that I set for the day has to change so that this becomes my priority but its important not to let it overwhelm me.
