In this essay, you will give an interpretative analysis of a piece of pop culture (a film, a character, a TV show, a scene, etc.) that uses at least one of the assigned readings to help structure or articulate your interpretation, and express the significance of the interpretation on your discourse community. You are strongly encouraged to adapt your pop culture presentation into your essay 2.1, but you may choose a different topic if you wish. Your argument should respond to a Q@I with a clear specific subject. That means, your interpretation should be about one particular pop text and your argument should be considered at issue. For example: Does Cinderella internalize misogyny in girls? Does Once Upon a Time reinforce marginalization of queer couples in pop culture? You must frame your argument as an answer to this question in enthymeme form. You may choose an alternative Q@I- but I encourage you to check your question with me first. Some of the guiding Q@Is (that must be made more specific) for this unit are:
Is X an empowering representation of a marginalized identity? Which, and if so, how? Is X a disempowering representation of Y? Which, and if so, how? Does X reinforce entrenched racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic stereotypes? Which, and how? Does X challenge or critique these stereotypes? Which, and how?
