For the first write-up you are expected to compare neorealism and neoliberalism. As one aspect of liberalism, Neoliberal Institutionalism (NLI) posits that the proliferation of transnational challenges that are beyond the capacity of individual states requires the active role of institutions in global governance. How does this relate to the question of state power and sovereignty? Put your discussion within the context of (neo)realisms argument that the international structure is essentially anarchic. Do you think states exist in a state of anarchy? Is anarchy still a relevant characterization of the contemporary, globalized world? Or has the sovereignty of states been challenged by globalization? Conclude with a Marxist critique of international institutions. To answer the last part of the question, you have to integrate/synthesize the chapter on Marxism with international institutions using concepts such as imperialism, and hegemony.
