Describe Book Analysis: Midnight’s Children

For this paper, you will read a full-length work of contemporary literature: Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie and, through independent research, place the work into an ideological context within the world from which it came. In other words, look at the issues and ideas the work presents, decide what interests you, and develop an analysis of how this play fits into/complicates/challenges contemporary society. Use the work as a window to the world around you, examine its structure and themes, bring in other texts, explore an issue, and take an opinion on that issue and how the play relates to it and your outside research. In other words, you’re going to create the kind of analyses that you examined in composing your second paper, except with research and works of your own choosing this time. Assignment
Choose a work from the attached list of literary works that take up similar themes to this course to read and write your paper about. You will then write a thesis-driven literary analysis supported by secondary research that seeks to examine an important aspect of the work within a methodological framework (as discussed in Reading and Writing about Literature). Think of your classmates as your audience: they are basically affiliated with the conventions of literature, but may or may not have read the same work or secondary sources as you, so you will need to make your argument clear and deliberate for them.
You must use at least six sources (other than the work itself) in the completion of this assignment, although you should not be surprised if you need more (i.e., start early). At least half of these sources must be academic (journal articles or scholarly books), though they can be historical, theoretical, etc., depending on what will let you best explore the work. As you will see throughout the term, there are ways to do this tangentially, as well as directly.

When completed, your essay should be 10-11 pages, double-spaced, with a standard 12-point font, and should adhere to MLA guidelines.
