The written assignment (approx. 1000 words, 50% of the overall mark, learning outcome 3) You will be required to write a research-based article for potential submission to a fitness magazine (Fitpro or Fitpro Network) on a topic relevant to fitness professionals, that draws on research and knowledge from discipline(s) within sport and exercise. You should ensure that the content is suitable for an experienced exercise instructor or personal trainer; in other words, the information should not be too simplistic, and should be relevant to the instructor’s/trainer’s needs. Try to write something that is more original and cutting edge, on a subject about which the fitness professional doesn’t already know. You need to address the article to the instructor/personal trainer, NOT to the ‘exerciser’ or participant. Because the article could potentially be submitted to the magazine, it is vital that you ensure that work is not plagiarized, and that all the references that you have used are primary and full-text, and that you have read them! Ideas for a suitable article are on Blackboard (previous publications), and will be provided in the lecture. Example titles that would be suitable include (but please come up with your own): • Effect of social support in decreasing cardiovascular risk in a group exercise to music setting • Optimising subcultures among group class participants • Effectiveness of different teaching methods for the fitness professional • Mastering (or task)-orientated climate or ego-orientated climates in ETM/PT. • Delayed onset of muscle soreness: implications for new exercise participants. • Challenge and threat states for the instructor/PT • Use of positive and confidence-building instructions in building self-efficacy among your class participants • Adaptations to cater for different ethnic minorities in an exercise environment • Improving cognitive functioning through exercise
