Discuss National Security Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Please answer BOTH questions below to complete your final examination. Answers should be no longer than 5 pages (12 font, New Times Roman) in total:

1)Kissinger and Allison/Zelikow talk about the use of nuclear weapons in each of their books. One discusses opportunities to use nuclear weapons when Mutual Assured Destruction fails and the other reviews the efforts to avoid the failure of MAD that would have led to a massive nuclear exchange in 1962. If nuclear weapons deter, then why do so many countries, groups and individuals oppose the spread of nuclear weapons and conversely why do a number of States and non-state actors still seek to acquire them? Please answer the question with references to both the readings and lectures on these issues.

2)The threat of terrorists using weapons of mass destruction remains the number one issue for national security experts in the U.S., Europe, Russia, China, the Middle East and elsewhere. Please discuss how chemical and biological weapons are similar to nuclear weapons in the threat they pose to populated areas and how are they different? Also, discuss how radiological weapons represent a different threat than other weapons of mass destruction. Please answer referring to the readings and lectures of the course.
