The Pillars of Syrian Ba’ath Regime. Syria is a country that has had an extremely unstable political history, gaining independence from the Ottomans to losing it again to the French then succumbing to an internal turmoil of coups to finally maintaining one of the longest rules in the Middle East. It is due to this, that Syria is a highly interesting module to study. As much can be learned from how such a chronically shaken country managed to sustain not only its own but the region’s stability as well.
One of the most prominent political parties in Syria is the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, the ruling party, founded by Michel Aflaq and Salah-al-Din al-Bitar in 1947. The party advocates “Unity, freedom, and socialism”. It gained significant national and regional support due to its secular demeanor and strong promotion of pan Arabism. Its chief focus was to unite the Arabs and restore their glory.
