Write a 3-4 page essay answering TWO of the following questions with references from the textbook while demonstrating historical analysis. The topics do not have to necessarily have to relate to each other.
1. Describe the benefits and costs of the Mongol Empire
2. Why is it correct to consider this time an era of exploration and globalization?
3. What caused the rise of national monarchies in England or France or Russia?
4. What was the condition and role of religion and the Church during the period under consideration (think about Avignon papacy, the rise of piety, etc.)?
This is the textbook we will be using Cole & Symes\” Western Civilizations, Volume 1 (published by Norton); please make sure you are using the 18th edition. Cover depicts a Medieval banquet.
Your textbook is the main source and guide for this class.
Any competent student of history should have knowledge of the facts (names, dates, places, concepts, etc.). Equally important, historians engage in analytical writing in order to demonstrate understanding of relevant historical issues and debates. First-hand accounts is the raw materials of which history is made. Looking at these primary sources is where the real fun of studying history can be experienced. This will involve reading relevant sections of the textbook and interpreting primary source documents and excerpts of scholarly articles from the Digital History Center (textbook website). Writing assignments will be between 3-4 pages.
There is some basic research involved in these papers in this sense: knowing what sections of the textbook to read in order to answer the questions is part of the assignment.
