What is the spice and how is it related to the planetary ecology of the Arrakis?

Dune, as a piece of science fiction literature presents a far –off future of a multi-star system civilization fully dependent on a single source of energy (spice/mélange). The book explores the ways in which this future society is dependent on this material and the profound coupling of political, environmental, economic, and social spheres as a function of this substance. There are clear analogs and relationships that can be established and discussed between Dune and our contemporary issue of anthropogenically driven climate change. Please write a 3-5 page term paper that addresses the following: 1-What is the spice and how is it related to the planetary ecology of the Arrakis? 2-Compare and contrast how Dune’s spice is an analog to fossil fuels. Discuss the ways these substances influence various aspects of our society (social, political, and economic). 3-What was the ultimate lesson addressed about the consequences of a civilizations addiction to the spice and how light that shed light on our current dependency on fossil fuels? 4-Given humans are essentially planet-bound species, do you think we can ever have an existence where we are free of the kinds of dependencies explored in Dune? Be thoughtful here and thoroughly explain your position based on the science of planetary processes we have discussed in this course. This paper should NOT BE an exposition of your opinion. Please root your answers in the Dune text and please cite relevant literature we have read from readings or text that provide sound and established scientific knowledge about climate/planetary processes (paper must have this component). Please use appropriate citation format (included) and write a document free of typos and poor grammar/syntax (points will be deducted for poorly written papers)
